Why buy a Mitsubishi ASX in 2024

12 March 2024

The Mitsubishi ASX has captured the hearts of New Zealanders. The popular compact SUV seamlessly blends style, practicality and zippy performance into a well-rounded package at an extremely competitive price point. The eye-catching exterior houses a sleek and comfortable interior brimming with safety features that make the ASX popular for a wide audience - from young families looking to take advantage of the SUV's ample storage space, to senior citizens after a safe SUV that is easy to enter and exit and provides extensive visibility with its larger mirrors. With all these things considered, it's no wonder that Canster recognised the Mitsubishi ASX as one of 2023's best-selling vehicles. Even though that was last year, the ASX still has an incredible amount of value to offer in 2024.

The Price is Right

Thankfully, Mitsubishi ASX hits the sweet spot between price and quality. It offers an unbeatable value proposition with its cutting-edge features, stellar performance, and affordable pricing.

The idea of buying a new car in New Zealand for under $30,000 is a difficult affair, and expecting to find an SUV in that price range seems like a dream. For those after a few more comfort and convenience features and who have a bit more of a flexible budget, the next model in the lineup is the Mitsubishi ASX Black Edition. The ASX Black Edition is still hovering around that $30,000 mark, being priced at $31,990 + delivery costs.

The final model in the lineup is the Mitsubishi ASX VRX Black Edition. The Alternatives

The compact SUV class is incredibly competitive. Over the last decade, the SUV in general has risen in popularity, with the compact class seeing a particular uptick. With so many options available, let's see how the ASX stacks up against its competitors.

Kia Seltos - 2023 LX 2.0 Petrol

When put against the Kia Seltos, the Mitsubishi ASX edges out the Kia in a few key aspects. Firstly, It offers a 92 km longer range whilst delivering 0.8 l/100km lower fuel consumption. From a comfort and convenience perspective, the ASX is miles ahead of the Seltos's minimal offering - boasting an 8-inch touchscreen audio display with built-in apps, voice-activated radio, automatic air conditioning, and two front USB connections.

The ASX has LED headlights over the Saltos's halogen lights for improved lighting. It features seven airbags for safety compared to six in the Seltos and delivers 20 Nm more torque for superior power. Overall, the ASX offers economy, comfort, safety, and performance advantages over the Kia Seltos.

MG ZS - 2023 1.5 Excite Auto

There are some key standouts when it comes to comparing the Mitsubishi ASX to the MG ZS. With a longer driving range of 101 km and lower fuel consumption by 1 l/100km, the ASX excels in emissions and economy. It offers enhanced entertainment over the MG with features like built-in apps, digital radio, and Android Auto. Comfort is elevated with a telescopic adjustment steering wheel and automatic air conditioning. Safety is a priority with additional airbags and head restraints. The ASX outshines in performance with a larger engine and more power, 0.5L larger than the MG's. Its spacious interior, premium exterior finish, and superior lighting further enhance its appeal over the MG.

Toyota Yaris Cross - 2023 1.5 GX CVT

The Yaris Cross is a solid offering from Toyota, so let's see how Mitsubishi's ASX stacks up. The efficiency of the ASX's performance is a running trend in these comparisons, with it once again boasting a 41 km longer range whilst consuming providing a  2.5 l /100km better fuel economy. In a similar vein to the previous comparisons, the ASX comfort and convenience features over a more complete package than the Yaris Cross, offering built-in apps and an extra front USB connection for entertainment. The ASX enhances comfort with one air conditioning zone, piano black facia trim, a leather gear knob, automatic air conditioning, and an automatic rearview mirror operation. It also provides front and rear armrests for seating comfort. The ASX's exterior features 10% lower profile tyres and LED low beam and high beam headlights, as well as front fog lights. On the technical side, it has a 0.5 l larger engine, a 4-cylinder engine, and delivers 32 more hp/PS, 24 more kW, and 55 Nm more torque. Practicality

One of the main draws of a compact SUV is its versatility and practicality. This is particularly important in New Zealand where it's very common to commute from city to suburb to rural streets.... all in one journey. While those truly looking to take on New Zealand's varied and at times rugged landscape are better off with the likes of the Mitsubishi Outlander, the ASX still offers many of the day-to-day practical advantages found in Mitsubishi's more aggressive offerings. Its excellent driving dynamics, combined with high ground clearance and robust build, make it a safe and smooth driving experience no matter what NZ roads you find yourself on. With a spacious interior and ample cargo space, the ASX is perfect for both a daily runner and a family road trip. Moreover, the ASX is popular among Kiwi senior citizens due to its easy accessibility and wide visibility. The large mirrors, spacious interiors, and easy ingress and egress make it a comfortable ride for all ages.

Reliability

Reliability is a key factor that influences car purchases, and the Mitsubishi ASX doesn't disappoint! Mitsubishi's vehicles are known for their durability and resilience, and the ASX is no exception. But don't just take our word for it, because even the most sceptical will find it hard to disagree with Mitsubishi's confidence in the reliability of the ASX given that it comes with the most extensive new car warranty available in New Zealand -  Mitsubishi's 5/10 Diamond Advantage. The Diamond Advantage consists of

  • 5-year/ 130,000 km new vehicle warranty
  • 10-year / 160,000 km powertrain warranty
  • 5 years of premium roadside assistance.
